Reminder Time

It’s time to remind you that a correction should not be paired with any negative emotions. You should not be angry or frustrated with your dog when you correct her. You are simply providing meaningful information that her behavior is not acceptable. If your correction is delivered above the threshold required to change her behavior, she will demonstrate self-restraint regarding your expectations.

3. Have a helper present a distraction by making a noise or tossing a tennis ball.

4. If your dog turns toward the distraction, use a quick collar check to correct him.

5. When your dog turns back to watch you, reward him with verbal praise or a treat.

6. Repeat the exercise. If your dog ignores the distraction when it is presented, reward him with verbal praise or a treat. If he is still distracted, correct him, but avoid nagging.

7. Repeat the exercise in a number of different scenarios with increasingly challenging distractions.

8. Repeat the exercise when you are sitting with your dog in front, when you are standing with your dog in front, and when you are standing with your dog in heel position.
